Newcastle boss Alan Pardew is desperate to add to his squad despite seeing his side drag themselves into the Barclays Premier League’s top six with a 2-1 win over Fulham.
Leon Best served a reminder of his determination to win a regular starting place with a decisive double, while Ryan Taylor once again deputised as left-back with owner Mike Ashley, managing director Derek Llambias and club secretary Lee Charnley still trying to plug the gaps into which they slotted ahead of Wednesday night’s transfer deadline.
However, Pardew is not concerned that a four-game unbeaten start to the new campaign will persuade the trio that there is no need to buy. He said: “It never worries me about winning games, I never really worry about that.”
Pardew added: “But I am frustrated that we haven’t got a couple of bodies in yet, and I think Derek and Lee and Mike are frustrated as well.
“Hopefully, we will get it over the line this week.”
Asked how important it was to win in the wake of Joey Barton’s departure to QPR last week, Pardew said: “It is significant because he is obviously a large personality, but the club is always bigger than the individual, always, and it’s now about other players making their reputation here.
“Joey was great in his time here, especially under me. I enjoyed working with him, contrary to some things you hear – and this and that.
“We had a great relationship and I wish him well. For us, though, we move on and that’s how football is. It moves very, very quickly.
“We have got seven points out of a really tough programme and we are pleased with that.”
